Year 7 is the first secondary NAPLAN, and it can feel different — new school, longer tests, harder content. But the format is the same adaptive online test your child has done before. Consistent practice with curriculum-aligned questions is the most effective preparation.
What's Tested at Year 7
Reading
More demanding texts — persuasive essays, media texts, literary extracts, and information reports. Questions require deeper inference, evaluating arguments, identifying bias, understanding text structure, and interpreting visual elements (graphs, diagrams, maps alongside text).
Writing
Online. Your child writes a sustained response (persuasive or narrative) demonstrating control of text structure, cohesion between paragraphs, varied sentence types, precise vocabulary, and accurate spelling and punctuation throughout.
Language Conventions
Advanced spelling (word origins, technical vocabulary), grammar (complex and compound sentences, passive voice, verb agreement in complex constructions), and punctuation (semicolons, colons, dashes, parenthetical commas).
Numeracy
Integers, fractions, decimals and percentages (all operations), ratios, algebraic expressions, linear equations, angle relationships, area and volume, coordinate geometry, probability (experimental and theoretical), data representation (stem-and-leaf, histograms), and statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range).

Parent Tips for Year 7
- Read widely. News articles, opinion pieces, science articles, and fiction all build the comprehension skills NAPLAN tests. Even 15 minutes a day makes a difference.
- Practise under light time pressure. Year 7 has 65 minutes for reading and numeracy. Doing a practice set with a loose timer builds pacing without stress.
- Algebra is new territory. Many Year 7 students find algebra confronting. Regular short practice (10 minutes, a few times a week) builds comfort faster than long occasional sessions.
- Discuss what you read together. “What was the author trying to convince you of?” and “Do you agree?” build the analytical thinking NAPLAN assesses.
- Reassure. NAPLAN doesn't determine your child's future. It's information for their school and for you.
