By Year 5, your child has done NAPLAN before — so the format is familiar. The content steps up: longer reading passages, more complex maths, and higher expectations in writing. Regular practice with the right content builds confidence without stress.
What's Tested at Year 5
Reading
Longer and more varied texts — stories, articles, poems, advertisements, and instructions. Questions test inference (reading between the lines), finding the author's purpose, understanding figurative language, and connecting ideas across a text.
Writing
Done online. Your child writes a longer, more structured response to a prompt. Assessed on ideas, paragraphing, sentence variety, vocabulary range, accurate spelling, and correct punctuation (including commas, apostrophes, and speech marks).
Language Conventions
More complex spelling (prefixes, suffixes, homophones, commonly confused words), grammar (complex sentences, subject-verb agreement, tense consistency), and punctuation (commas in lists, apostrophes for possession, quotation marks).
Numeracy
Place value (to millions), all four operations (including long multiplication and division), fractions and decimals (equivalence, addition, subtraction), percentages, perimeter and area, angles, coordinate grids, data interpretation (line graphs, tables), and probability (likely, unlikely, certain, impossible).

Parent Tips for Year 5
- Focus on comprehension, not speed. NAPLAN reading isn't a race — your child has 50 minutes. Practise reading carefully and re-reading when unsure.
- Practise explaining maths thinking. NAPLAN numeracy includes questions where your child chooses a strategy. Talking through “how did you work that out?” builds this skill.
- Write regularly. Even a short paragraph a few times a week builds fluency. Prompt ideas: “Tell me about a time you were surprised” or “Convince me that dogs are better than cats.”
- Review spelling patterns. Year 5 spelling moves beyond phonics into patterns — doubling consonants, silent letters, Greek and Latin roots. A few minutes of practice each week helps.
- Keep it positive. “You're getting better at this” is more motivating than pointing out mistakes.
