Year 3 NAPLAN Practice — Numeracy & Literacy, Australian Curriculum Aligned
Year 3 is most children's first experience with NAPLAN. It can feel like a big deal — but it's designed to be manageable, and there's no pass or fail. The best thing you can do is help your child feel familiar with the types of questions they'll see, so nothing feels surprising on the day.
What's Tested at Year 3
Reading
Your child reads short texts (stories, information pieces, poems) and answers questions about them. They need to find key information, understand what characters feel, and work out what words mean from context.
Writing
Year 3 is the only level where writing is still done on paper. Your child writes a response to a prompt — usually a narrative (story) or a persuasive piece. They're assessed on ideas, text structure, sentence structure, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation.
Language Conventions
Spelling (common words, word patterns), grammar (sentence structure, verb tense, punctuation), and punctuation (full stops, commas, question marks, apostrophes).
Numeracy
Number and place value (to thousands), addition and subtraction (with regrouping), multiplication basics (2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s), fractions (halves, quarters, eighths), measurement (length, mass, capacity, time), 2D and 3D shapes, data and graphs, and simple probability.

Parent Tips for Year 3
- Start early, go slow. A few worksheets a week from now until March is better than 20 the week before.
- Don't call it “test practice.” Call it “maths time” or “reading practice.” The word “test” can make young children anxious.
- Read together every day. Reading comprehension is the single biggest predictor of NAPLAN results — and the simplest thing to build at home.
- Practise writing by hand. Year 3 writing is on paper. If your child mostly types, give them regular pen-and-paper time.
- Celebrate effort, not scores. “You worked hard on that” matters more than “you got 8 out of 10.”
