Subtract with Pictures
Subtracting means taking some away. The crossed-out objects show what's been removed. Count only the objects that are NOT crossed out — those are what's left.
Worked examples
5 − 2 = ?
Start with 5 apples. Cross out 2. Count what's left: 1, 2, 3. Answer is 3.
Answer: 3
6 − 4 = ?
Start with 6. Take away 4. Count what remains: 1, 2. Answer is 2.
Answer: 2
Tips
- •Only count the objects NOT crossed out.
- •You can also count backwards: 5, take away 2 = count back two steps: 4, 3.
- •The answer is always smaller than (or equal to) what you started with.
