Same and Different
These questions ask you to compare two things or two groups. For 'same or different' questions: focus on ONE attribute at a time (colour, shape, or size) and decide if they match. For 'more or fewer' questions: count each group carefully, then compare the totals.
Worked examples
Are these the same colour?
Look at the colour of each item. The first is red. The second is also red. They are both red — they match. So the answer is 'same'.
Answer: Yes — same
Are these the same colour?
Look at the colour of each item. The first is red. The second is blue. They are different colours — they do not match. So the answer is 'different'.
Answer: No — different
Are these the same shape?
Look only at the shape. One is a circle (round). The other is a square (4 equal sides). They are different shapes — they do not match. Answer: 'different'.
Answer: No — different
Which group has more?
Step 1 — Count Group A: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Group A has 5. Step 2 — Count Group B: 1, 2, 3. Group B has 3. Step 3 — Compare: 5 is more than 3. So Group A has more.
Answer: Group A
Which group has fewer?
Step 1 — Count Group A: 5 stars. Count Group B: 3 stars. Step 2 — Compare: 3 is less than 5. 'Fewer' means the smaller number. So Group B has fewer.
Answer: Group B
Tips
- •For 'same or different': focus on ONE thing at a time — just colour, just shape, or just size.
- •'Same' means they match exactly in what you are comparing.
- •'Different' means they do NOT match — at least one thing is different.
- •For 'more or fewer': always count each group first, then compare.
- •'More' = bigger number. 'Fewer' = smaller number.
