Position Words
Position words describe WHERE something is in relation to another object. Always look at the picture carefully and ask: is the animal higher, lower, beside, or inside the other object? Then find the word that matches.
Worked examples
Where is the animal? Choose: above, below, beside, inside
Look at the picture. The dog is HIGHER than the box — it is up in the air above it. 'Above' means higher than. So the answer is 'above'.
Answer: above
Where is the animal? Choose: above, below, beside, inside
Look at the picture. The cat is LOWER than the object — it is underneath. 'Below' means lower than or underneath. So the answer is 'below'.
Answer: below
Where is the animal? Choose: above, below, beside, inside
Look at the picture. The cat is IN the box — it is surrounded by the box on all sides. 'Inside' means within or in. So the answer is 'inside'.
Answer: inside
Where is the animal? Choose: in front of, behind, beside, above
Look at the picture. The dog is next to the object on one side — not inside, not above or below, just alongside it. 'Beside' means next to. So the answer is 'beside'.
Answer: beside
Tips
- •Above = higher than the object. Below = lower than the object.
- •Inside = within the object. Outside = not inside.
- •Beside = next to the object on the side.
- •In front of = facing the object. Behind = at the back of the object.
- •Left = on the left side. Right = on the right side.
