Counting
These questions show you a group of objects and ask you to count how many there are. Count each object one at a time, from left to right. Touch or point to each one as you say the number — the LAST number you say is the total.
Worked examples
How many stars are there?
Point to each star as you count: 1, 2, 3, 4. You counted 4 stars. The last number you said — 4 — is the answer.
Answer: 4
How many apples are there?
Touch each apple one at a time: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. There are 7 apples. Count carefully — don't skip any and don't count the same one twice.
Answer: 7
How many dots are there?
Count from left to right, row by row: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. There are 12 dots. For bigger groups, count in rows so you don't get lost.
Answer: 12
How many hearts are there?
Count each heart: 1, 2, 3. There are 3 hearts. For small groups, this is quick and easy!
Answer: 3
How many circles are there?
Count carefully: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 … 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 … 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. For large groups, try counting in groups of 5 to stay on track. There are 15 circles.

Tips
- •Always touch or point to each object as you count — don't let your eyes jump around.
- •Count from left to right, top to bottom, so you don't miss any.
- •The LAST number you say is the total count.
- •If you lose track, start again from the beginning.
- •For big groups, count in fives: 5, 10, 15, 20...
