Count on Ten Frames

A ten-frame is a grid with 10 spaces arranged in 2 rows of 5. Dots fill the spaces from left to right, top row first. Count only the filled (coloured) dots.

Worked examples

How many dots are in the ten-frame?

The top row is completely filled — that's 5. The bottom row has 2 filled. 5 + 2 = 7.

Answer: 7

How many dots are in the ten-frame?

Count the filled dots in the top row only: one, two, three. The answer is 3.

Answer: 3

Tips

  • A full top row is always 5 — you don't need to count it.
  • If the top row is full, say '5' then add the bottom row dots.
  • Empty spaces are not dots — don't count them.
