Add Numbers

Addition combines two numbers to find the total. 3 + 4 = 7 means starting at 3 and counting 4 more steps forward on the number line.

Worked examples

3 + 4 = ?

Start at 3. Count on 4 more: 4, 5, 6, 7. The answer is 7.

Answer: 7

5 + 3 = ?

Start at 5 (the bigger number). Count on 3: 6, 7, 8. The answer is 8.

Answer: 8

Tips

  • Start with the bigger number and count on the smaller.
  • Use your fingers to count on.
  • Addition always gives you a number that is the same or bigger.
