Spaces Between Words

Words in writing are separated by SPACES. The space tells your eyes where one word ends and the next one begins. Without spaces, the words would all run together and be hard to read.

Worked examples

How many words? — 'the cat ran'

Count the gaps! 'the' (space) 'cat' (space) 'ran'. Three words.

Answer: 3

How many words? — 'I like pizza'

Count the words between spaces: I, like, pizza. Three words.

Answer: 3

Tips

  • A space is a small gap between two words.
  • Count the words by counting how many CHUNKS there are between spaces.
  • When you write, leave a finger-space between each word.
