Who is the Character?
A character is a person or animal in a story. Books and stories have characters that do things, say things, and feel things. When you read a story, ask: 'Who is in it?' The answer is the character. A story might have one character or many.
Worked examples
Story: 'Tom the cat went to the park. He played with a red ball.' Who is the character?
Look at who is doing things in the story. Tom is the one going to the park and playing — he is the character.
Answer: Tom the cat
Story: 'Maya picked a flower for her mum.' Who is the character?
Maya is the person doing the action (picking a flower). She is the character in this story.
Answer: Maya

- •A character can be a person, an animal, or even a toy in stories.
- •Look for who is doing or saying something — that's the character.
- •Some stories have more than one character — name all of them.
- •The main character is the one the story is mostly about.
