Where is the Story Set?
The setting is where a story happens. Every story takes place somewhere — at a park, in a house, at school, in the forest. When you read, ask: 'Where is this happening?' The answer is the setting.
Worked examples
Story: 'Lily built a sandcastle.' Where is the setting most likely to be?
You build sandcastles at the beach because sand is there. The setting is the beach.
Answer: the beach
Story: 'Ben sat at his desk and opened his book.' Where is the setting?
Desks and books are things you find in a classroom — the story is set at school.
Answer: at school (or a classroom)

- •The setting tells you WHERE — not who or what.
- •Look for clues in the words: sand → beach, desk → school, trees → forest.
- •Pictures in a book help you see the setting.
- •Some stories change setting — the characters move from one place to another.
