Vocabulary
Vocabulary is the bank of words you KNOW. The more words you know, the easier it is to understand stories and explain your ideas. We add words to the bank by reading, listening and asking 'what does that mean?'.
Worked examples
Which word means 'very small'? — tiny, huge, loud, quick
'Tiny' means very, very small — like an ant or a baby's toe. The others mean big, noisy, and fast.
Answer: tiny
Which word means 'happy'? — sad, joyful, angry, sleepy
'Joyful' is another way to say 'happy' — both describe a smiling-inside feeling.
Answer: joyful
Tips
- •When you read a new word, ask 'what does that mean?'
- •Try to use a new word in a sentence the same day you learn it.
- •Pictures often hint at the meaning of words around them.
- •Words that mean almost the same thing are called SYNONYMS.
