A category is a group of things that belong together. Apples and bananas are both FRUIT. Dogs and cats are both ANIMALS. Sorting words into categories helps you learn how things connect.

Which group does 'banana' belong to? — fruits, animals, or colours

A banana is something you eat that grows on a tree. It belongs in the 'fruits' group.

Answer: fruits

Which group does 'red' belong to? — fruits, animals, or colours

Red is a colour — like fire or a strawberry. It belongs in the 'colours' group.

Tips

  • Ask: 'What is this word?' (a food? an animal? a colour?)
  • Then ask: 'Which group has other words like that?'
  • Some words can fit in more than one group — pick the BEST match.
