Sentences
A complete sentence has a capital letter at the start, an end mark (. ? !) at the end, and tells a whole idea. Practising spotting whole sentences helps you write your own.
Worked examples
Which one is a complete sentence?
'The cat sat on the mat.' has a capital T, ends with a full stop, and tells a whole idea. The other choices are usually missing one of those parts.
Answer: The cat sat on the mat.
Which one is NOT a complete sentence? — (A) Mum baked a cake. (B) running fast
B is missing a capital letter and a full stop, and doesn't tell us WHO is running. A is a full sentence.
Answer: B
Tips
- •Look for a CAPITAL LETTER at the start.
- •Look for an END MARK at the finish.
- •Ask: 'Does this tell a whole idea?'
