Reading Direction
In English books, we read from LEFT to RIGHT, and from the TOP of the page to the BOTTOM. The first word is at the top-left of the page. When you finish a line, your eyes go back to the left and down to the next line.
Worked examples
When you start reading a page in English, where do you look first?
English starts at the top of the page on the LEFT. That's where the first word lives.
Answer: top-left
When you finish reading a line, where do your eyes go next?
You sweep your eyes BACK to the left and DOWN one line. Then you read left to right again.
Answer: down to the left side of the next line
Tips
- •Left to right, top to bottom.
- •Use your finger to follow the words when you're starting out.
- •When the line ends, jump back to the left side of the next line down.
