What is the Picture About?
Pictures tell stories too. When you look at a picture, ask: 'What is happening here?' The answer is what the picture is about. Picture books use pictures and words together to tell a story.
Worked examples
A picture shows a girl holding a balloon at a party with a birthday cake. What is the picture about?
Balloons, a cake, and a happy child are clues — the picture is about a birthday party.
Answer: a birthday party
A picture shows children digging sand and waves in the background. What is the picture about?
Sand, waves, and digging are beach things — the picture is about playing at the beach.
Answer: a day at the beach

- •Look at everything in the picture, not just one part.
- •Use the clues — what people are wearing, where they are, what they're holding.
