Which One is NOT Like the Others?

When you have a group of words, one might not belong with the others. That's the 'odd one out'. Spotting the odd one helps you understand what makes things belong together.

Worked examples

Which word does NOT belong? — apple, banana, dog, orange

Apple, banana, and orange are all FRUITS. Dog is an animal — it doesn't belong with the fruits.

Answer: dog

Which word does NOT belong? — red, blue, yellow, cat

Red, blue, and yellow are all COLOURS. Cat is an animal — it's the odd one out.

Answer: cat

Tips

  • Look at the words and ask: 'What do most of them have in common?'
  • The one that DOESN'T have that thing is the odd one out.
  • Sometimes three are animals and one is food — sometimes three are colours and one is a shape.
