Use Number Words

Numbers can be written as numerals (1, 2, 3) or as words (one, two, three). Foundation kids learn the number words for 0–10 so they can read them in books and write them too.

Worked examples

What is the number word for 3?

The numeral 3 is read as 'three'. Say the word out loud and remember the spelling.

Answer: three

What number word matches the numeral 7?

7 is 'seven'. Learn the small numbers first (one through ten) — they come up everywhere.

Answer: seven

Tips

  • Practise one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
  • Some look similar — 'four' / 'five' / 'fourteen' / 'fifteen' — read carefully.
  • Saying the word out loud helps you remember the spelling.
