Letter Identification
There are 26 letters in the alphabet, and each one has TWO shapes — a CAPITAL (big) shape and a LOWERCASE (small) shape. Learning to spot every letter quickly is the first step to reading.
Worked examples
Which letter is this? — 'A'
It's a triangle with a bar across — that's CAPITAL A. The lowercase looks different: 'a'.
Answer: A
Which is the lowercase of 'B'? — b, d, p, q
Lowercase 'b' has the tall stick on the LEFT and the bump on the right. Be careful — 'd' is the mirror image.
Answer: b
Tips
- •Sing the alphabet song while pointing at each letter.
- •Trace letters with your finger to remember their shapes.
- •b/d, p/q and m/w look similar — say each letter's sound to tell them apart.
- •Capital and lowercase letters say the same sound — they're the same letter in different clothes.
