Capitals for Names

Names of people (Sam, Mia) and special places (Sydney, Australia) always start with a CAPITAL LETTER — even in the middle of a sentence. These are called PROPER NOUNS.

Worked examples

Fix the mistake: 'My dog tom is friendly.'

'tom' is a name. Names always start with a capital letter. Change to 'Tom'.

Answer: My dog Tom is friendly.

Fix the mistake: 'We went to sydney on the weekend.'

'sydney' is the name of a city — a special place. Names of places get capital letters. Change to 'Sydney'.

Answer: We went to Sydney on the weekend.

Tips

  • People's names → capital (Sam, Mia, Mum, Dad).
  • Place names → capital (Sydney, Australia, Brisbane).
  • Pets' names → capital (Rex, Whiskers).
  • If it names a SPECIFIC person, place, or pet — use a capital.
